How have your experiences changed how you view your mom? I wish she could know that help is out there. And that if she's feeling any guilt, she doesn't need to feel that anymore because we're not mad at her.
My relationship with my mom has definitely evolved from not understanding her to being angry with her, to now understanding how she felt. It's an evolving relationship we have with people who we didn't fully understand as kids, and ours is a very alive relationship. But I have a good relationship with her now and that's taken some time, work, and learning from myself. How do you navigate that? You can probably relate to that more than anybody. I think that's part of the reason why I wanted to write a whole book and not just do one-off pieces or a fragmented story via social media.
You unexpectedly ended up spending five months training in Patras, Greece, which was under a very strict lockdown at the beginning of the COVID pandemic, before eventually returning to the U. With no races to train for and the Tokyo Olympics postponed to , how has that changed your running plans? It changed it quite a bit.
I had just switched coaches because it made more sense to be coached locally rather than remotely from the U. The original plan was to target a spring marathon and attempt to run the Olympic standard for women to qualify to represent Greece in Tokyo, before seemingly everything started to get canceled. Since returning to Los Angeles, where I live, I've also tried to work more on my physical weaknesses, specifically with regard to my posture and the theory of relative strength, understanding how the muscles in my body play into each other.
Taking a pause from competing in races has allowed me to have time to dedicate to strength training every other day with professional experts, when I normally would probably just do the strength training I know on my own.
I'm looking forward to having more racing opportunities, making more movies, and meeting more people in person, as I was looking forward to doing an actual book tour versus a virtual one.
