They were brothers in war. Why did Optimus Prime appear as a truck on Cybertron in the Bumblebee movie when he had not yet set foot on Earth in order to scan a truck? His Cybertronian mode was pretty close to a truck, so he picked an Earth mode that was really close, like cosplaying a character you already kinda resemble. He Groundbridged to the Nemesis bridge where four Vehicons aimed at him. Miko then jumped through wearing the Apex Armor, killed them and charged at Soundwave. He often employs the help of Decepticons in his work, and in some stories is considered part of the origin of the Decepticon forces….
Throughout each movie after the first one, Optimus became more and more violent and stronger than the last and even getting smarter. Also at the end of the 3 movie, even though Optimus is missing an arm, he kills Megatron almost instantly without batting an eye. Megatron is inferior and Optimus is superior. Unicron was ultimately defeated as was Megatrons Prime, who has been known as The Fallen at the time.
These events led to the creation of the Decepticons. At one point, the Autobot rulers became corrupt and Megatron, an anonymous gladiator, led a rebellion against the corrupt government. A young Transformer called Orion Pax, was a member of that rebellion and he idolized Megatron. Still, when Megatron came to power, he also became corrupt and thus Orion Pax, who would soon become Optimus Prime, had to leave his former ally and brother in arms to lead the Autobots in their fight against the terror of the Decepticons.
As you can see, Megatron and Optimus Prime were former allies who went their separate ways when Megatron became a corrupt leader. They were never related in any other way. Now what we know the shared history between these two fierce warriors, I can answer this question with relative ease. Having said this, we now know that it has happened in the adaptations, which is why I am going to give you a brief explanation related to the reasons behind this term.
